Understand the uses of aspirin for dogs, the dosage, risks and side effects as well as alternative remedies for safer joint pain and arthritis relief. Belly Fat / Weight Loss. Being overweight has become an epidemic in America. The Standard American Diet (SAD) has caused many of us to be overweight due to the fact that most of our food has been genetically altered and chemicals added. Unfortunately for us it is not real food anymore it has lost most of its nutritional value. For instance the wheat we eat now is not the same wheat our grandparents ate; it has been genetically altered over the past 2. Gluten is a protein that is found in wheat, barley, rye and some other grains. You may have noticed there is recent gluten sensitivity problem going on. It seems like everyone is sensitive to gluten. Twenty or thirty years ago you rarely heard of anyone sensitive to gluten. American adult obesity and child obesity is now at an all time high. As you gain fat your body starts to change shape. This is due to the body storing fat under the skin called subcutaneous fat. Subcutaneous fat is the fat you can “see”; it is what gives us our body shape. Your body shape depends on how well your glands and organs are functioning. This is the fat that most people want to get rid of but it is not the most dangerous fat. The second type of fat you will have is viscera fat. This is the most dangerous fat because it accumulates around the glands and organs inside the body. It accumulates around your heart, liver etc. This in turn can lead to heart disease, diabetes, 4. Insulin resistance, 1. Alzheimer’s disease and more. Just from having excessive belly fat. The glands and organs that affect our body shape and where we accumulate fat are the thyroid, adrenals, ovaries and liver. There are only four reasons a person cannot lose weight or cannot keep weight off. They are 1. Sluggish thyroid; 2. Liver dysfunction, 3. Ovaries (hormones out of balance). Adrenal fatigue. Each one of these has their own set of symptoms and area of the body where the weight (fat) will accumulate. Sluggish Thyroid: A whole book could be written on the “sluggish thyroid” and many have. When I’m talking about sluggish thyroid’ I am talking about hypothyroid. You are diagnosed with hypothyroid when your TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) is above 5. Once you are diagnosed with hypothyroid the standard course of treatment would be to prescribe thyroid medication like Synthroid, lavoxal, Armor, etc. The thyroid is located in the front of the throat and is a butterfly shape. Its main function is metabolism. The thyroid regulates the rate at which the body burns food and controls the production of certain body tissues such as nails and hair. The thyroid gland also regulates body temperature, breakdown of carbohydrates, mental clarity and well- being, energy levels and even vitamin absorption, cholesterol levels, hair texture, nail strength, softness or dryness of the skin and sex drive are all greatly influenced by the thyroid. Metabolism refers to the rate or speed at which the body breaks down food and changes it into living tissue and energy. Metabolism is also defined as the release of energy left, (burning of fat) from the cells. The first major consequence of a sluggish thyroid is a slow metabolism. Everything gets slower, brain processes can be suppressed triggering what appears to be depression, lethargy and a general apathetic feeling. A loss of libido (sex drive) can occur with a sluggish thyroid. It could also cause a complete loss of the menstrual cycle. Another condition that may manifest is a feeling of being tired all the time, despite sleeping for long hours. This could get diagnosed as chronic fatigue. The thyroid also controls the oil glands and blood flow to the skin. A sluggish thyroid can mean dry skin and dry brittle hair. With a thyroid problem a person could attempt to curl their hair and not be able to maintain the curl. They might even lose the outer one third of their eyebrows. Since the thyroid gland controls metabolism, in a non- optimal state it begins to drive body temperatures to well below normal, causing cold feet and cold hands. Sufferers will start to wear extra clothing, even in moderate climates. Some people will have to wear socks to bed. I had one patient tell me her feet were so cold she had to wear socks and slippers to bed. As everything starts to get slower, the body will demand quick energy as a carbohydrate craving. The most common craving that I have observed in my clinic with thyroid types are starches. Vegetable starches such as potatoes, yams, corn, french fries and hash browns are easily converted to fat, and some of the sweeter fruits have a negative effect on insulin. Weight Loss. Mom Who Weighed Over 300 Lbs. Was Determined to Lose Weight Without Surgery: How She Lost 145 Lbs. The carbohydrates that I’m mainly talking about are the refined ones, for example: breads, pasta, cereals, crackers, pancake, waffles, doughnuts, cakes, muffins, rice cakes, cookies, candy, chocolate, juice, alcohol, wine, beer and ice cream are all refined carbohydrates. The thyroid body type will crave these. The body shape resulting from a sluggish thyroid is an overall fat distribution. You will gain weight evenly distributed throughout your body and you will have a great deal of waste like fluid weight that contributes to the appearance of having an overall excessive weight problem. This condition is called myxedema and is a result of a thyroid that is not working to full capacity. Some additional symptoms may experience with a sluggish thyroid are weakness, fatigue, poor or/low appetite, high cholesterol, brittle nails with vertical ridges, hair stiff and dry, hair loss or thinning hair, dry skin, puffiness around the eyes, sagging eyelids, difficulty making decisions, thickening of the tongue, voice gets deeper and rougher in sound. Liver: The liver body shape has the big potbelly or better known as a beer belly. These are the guys you usually see on the beach wearing a Speedo with a beer in their hand, they look like your cousin or uncle. The liver is the body’s filtration system. It filters out microbes, drugs and dead cells from the body as an immune function. Every hormone, chemical, bacteria, virus, fungus and parasite is filtered through the liver. The liver is about as big as a football and lies under the rib cage on the right side and it is the biggest organ inside the body. It works much like an oil filter in your car. In addition, it acts as a digestive organ, breaks down fats, proteins and even carbohydrates it can also make sugar out of protein. The liver has 5. 60 known functions and researchers believe it has double that many functions. When the liver gets damaged the toxins that are normally filtered out are re- circulating through the body, re- exposing delicate glands to harmful compounds, triggering a toxic overload. Synthetic estrogen from growth hormones, medications, aspirin, birth control pills and HRT (hormone replacement therapy) also cause huge side effects and causes damage to the liver. When the liver is damaged it causes a potbelly appearance. This protruding abdomen is not always fat in fact most of it is fluid. If the liver is not functioning well it can leak fluids into the stomach area behind the glands and organs within the abdomen. This characteristic is called ascites, which comes from the Greek word askos, meaning “bladder”,” belly” or” wineskin (animal skin used to hold wine). If you push the belly from side to side it feels much like a water balloon. The fluid is leaking because the liver is not able to produce proteins. This becomes a low protein situation that can’t be improved by just eating more protein. This can only be improved by eating lots of vegetables and a little bit of high quality protein, this takes the stress off the liver and lets it heal. If you have excess weight in the midsection a glass of wine or beer at night will just make it worse. Liver types can usually have a dull pressure and a fullness feeling in the upper abdomen area under the right rib cage. After eating a meal the person can have belching and burping because the liver and gallbladder are not functioning properly at times the person may feel as though they’re getting arthritis in their joints this is a symptom of the liver dysfunction and not really arthritis. After a night’s sleep the person would wake up they would be struggling to get up in the morning and their eyes may be bloodshot. Liver people in the morning are grouchy, moody and irritable. You have to give them time to wake up let them have their first cup of coffee before you talk to them. Some other symptoms liver people may experience are: brown spots on the back of their hands and throughout their body, eyelids are itchy and swollen, hives and itchiness, skin problems, little red dots on skin, acid reflux, constipation, hemorrhoids, chemical sensitivities, stiffness in the lower back and/or upper back between the shoulder blades, right shoulder pain or tightness, gallbladder problems, headaches, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, varicose veins, spider veins, bad breath, tongue coated with white film and swelling in ankles. Ovaries: The ovaries produce three hormones responsible for controlling the menstrual cycle. The ovaries release eggs every month and are in charge of making the environment suitable for the eggs to grow. One of these hormones is estrogen. It creates the fat layer around a female body, specifically around the ovaries – hips, buttocks and lower abdomen below the belly button. When ovaries become dysfunctional, they can produce an excessive amount of estrogen, which causes more fat. This fat is deposited on the thighs lower stomach and the buttock, went on the thighs it is known as saddlebags. Not only can the body make more estrogen due to dysfunction of the ovaries but there are many foods that can have synthetic or natural estrogen in them such as red meats, chicken, milk, pond raised fish, and soy. Some symptoms that may contribute to out of balance ovaries are: PMS (premenstrual syndrome), cravings at certain times of the month, bloating, extra painful cramping, and excessive menstrual bleeding, as well as depression during the menstrual cycle. Caffeine Helps Muscles Burn Body Fat, Improve Athletic Performance. Coffee is the fuel most of us depend on to wake up in the morning and jump start our day. It can also give us that #Monday. Motivation we need to hit the gym and crush our workout. Researchers at the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil suggest drinking coffee before exercise increases alertness, and makes it easier for muscles to burn body fat, increasing the likelihood of weight loss. The new study, published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, found drinking up to 4. Read More: Drink A Cup Of Coffee Before Working Out And It Might Boost Endurance, Enhance Performance“No matter the habitual caffeine intake in the diet, acute caffeine supplementation can improve performance,” Dr. Bruno Gualano, study author and a professor of physiology and nutrition at the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, told the New York Times. Gualano’s finding goes against conventional wisdom by scientists, coaches, and athletes, who previously believed caffeine served as a performance booster only when taken before an event, and abstained for days or weeks prior to it. The Brazilian researchers recruited a group of 4. Red Bull, and other caffeinated drinks they had every day or week. Based on their normal caffeine intake, they were divided into three groups: the low- caffeine group, averaging a cup or less of coffee or other caffeinated drinks on most days; the moderate- caffeine group, which had about two cups of coffee; and the high- caffeine group, which drank about three cups of coffee or more. The riders were asked to undergo a series of health and performance tests to evaluate the influence of caffeine on their workout. The participants were asked to come to the lab three more times to complete a time trial, where they rode as fast as possible until they burned about 4. This task would take riders about 3. The researchers asked them not to eat or drink anything in the morning before going to the lab. Riders were given a 4. An hour before another, they were given a similar- looking pill that only contained gelatin as a placebo. The riders were not told what was in the tablets during the two sessions; they did not receive any pills before their final ride. On average, those given the real caffeine pill were 3. A 2 to 3 percent increase in athletic performance can decrease a runner's marathon race time. Read More: Drinking 4 Cups Of Coffee Per Day Not Linked To Health Side Effects. Surprisingly, the results were the same whether the riders typically drank large amounts of coffee or other caffeine drinks every day, or if they were light coffee drinkers, even if they did not abstain from caffeine days before the study. Coffee is believed to help burn fat by mobilizing it from the fat tissues. It stimulates the nervous system, which sends direct signals to the fat cells to tell them to break down fat. It also increases blood levels of the hormone epinephrine, or adrenaline, which travels through the fat tissues and sends signals to break down fats, and release them into the blood as free fatty acids. The caffeinated beverage has also shown to reduce perceived muscle pain from our potential gains. A 2. 00. 9 study found drinking the equivalent of two to three cups of coffee one hour before a 3. This suggests caffeine could deliver the kick we need to work out harder during exercise. In his study, Gualano and his colleagues caution caffeine’s effects were only seen in young and fit men; it's not clear how caffeine intake would influence women's athletic performance. For example, previous research has found caffeine has an appetite- reducing effect in men, but not in women; men ate less at a meal after caffeine intake. Caffeine can help encourage muscles to burn more fat, and boost metabolism, but it has yet to be seen whether this effect is long- term. To test caffeine’s effects on your workout, start with small doses, and try a cup of coffee before hitting the gym. Source: Goncalves LS, Painelli VS, Yamaguchi G et al. Ulcers Facts: Causes, Symptoms, Risk Factors. There is no clear evidence to suggest that the stress of modern life or a steady diet of fast food causes ulcers in the stomach and small intestine, but they are nonetheless common in our society: About one out of every 1. Americans will suffer from the burning, gnawing abdominal pain of a peptic (or gastric) ulcer at some point in life. Peptic ulcers are holes or breaks in the protective lining of the duodenum (the upper part of the small intestine) or the stomach - - areas that come into contact with stomach acids and enzymes. Duodenal ulcers are more common than stomach ulcers. Comparatively rare are esophageal ulcers, which form in the esophagus - - or swallowing tube - - and are often a result of exposure to medications, like certain antibiotics or anti- inflammatories, or alcohol abuse. Pancreas Pain Symptoms. Upper abdominal pain that radiates into the back often indicates pancreatitis, a condition in which inflammation of the pancreas seriously. It was believed that such influences contribute to a buildup of stomach acids that erode the protective lining of the stomach, duodenum, or esophagus. While excessive stomach acid secretion certainly plays a role in the development of ulcers, a relatively recent theory holds that bacterial infection is the primary cause of peptic ulcers. Indeed, research conducted since the mid- 1. Helicobacter pylori(H. However, more recent figures indicate those percentages are declining. Overuse of over- the- counter painkillers (such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen), heavy alcohol use, psychological stress, and smoking exacerbate and may promote the development of ulcers, especially in someone with H. Other studies show that stomach ulcers are more likely to develop in older people. This may be because arthritis is prevalent in the elderly, and alleviating arthritis pain can mean taking daily doses of aspirin or ibuprofen. Another contributing factor may be that with advancing age the pylorus (the valve between the stomach and duodoneum) relaxes and allows excess bile (a compound produced in the liver to aid in digestion) to seep up into the stomach and erode the stomach lining. Continued. Also, for no known reason, people with type A blood are more likely to develop cancerous stomach ulcers. Duodenal ulcers tend to appear in people with type O blood, possibly because they do not produce the substance on the surface of blood cells that may protect the lining of the duodenum. Fortunately, peptic ulcers are relatively easy to treat; in many cases they are cured with antibiotics, antacids, and other drugs that reduce the amount of acid produced by the stomach. There are also a variety of self- help and alternative treatments that can aid in relieving pain. Still, the dangers associated with peptic ulcers - - such as anemia, profuse bleeding, and stomach cancer - - are serious, so ulcers should always be monitored by your doctor. Sources. Among the most common are: Abdominal pain or cramping. A bloated feeling. Gas Diarrhea or constipation — sometimes alternating bouts of constipation and diarrhea. Mucus in the stool. For most people, IBS is a chronic condition, although there will likely be times when the signs and symptoms are worse and times when they improve or even disappear completely. When to see a doctor. Although as many as 1 in 5 American adults has signs and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, fewer than 1 in 5 who have symptoms seek medical help. Yet it's important to see your doctor if you have a persistent change in bowel habits or if you have any other signs or symptoms of IBS because these may indicate a more serious condition, such as colon cancer. Symptoms that may indicate a more serious condition include: Rectal bleeding. Abdominal pain that progresses or occurs at night. Weight loss. Your doctor may be able to help you find ways to relieve symptoms as well as rule out colon conditions, such as inflammatory bowel disease and colon cancer. Most people seem to lose some weight, but I can’t afford this program,” said one dieter that was unable to join.“This program may work, but at those prices, I’ll never know,” said another. We did find some customers that didn’t mind the cost.“To keep the cost low, they do not seem to push products they don’t believe the customer really needs,” reported a member. Scroll below for one of the best products we’ve seen over the last year. Inconvenience of Metabolic Research Centers – “Another Concern?”Based on reviews of Metabolic Research Centers, side effects weren’t concerning, it was the inconvenience of the clinics. If the Metabolic Research Centers isn’t centrally located and is as expensive as claimed, losing and keeping it off could be problematic. The Science – “Clinical Backing?”There is plenty of information available backing Metabolic Research Centers. Studies have proven that a support group can help boost weight- loss, reduce average caloric intake and increase exercise. But, there’s no evidence that this program is more effective than others costing a fraction of this one. At Diet. Spotlight, clinical backing is critical to a positive end result. Metabolic Research Centers doesn’t prove they are better than the competition and that’s troublesome. The Bottom Line – Do Metabolic Research Centers Work? So, we’re ready to give you the 4. There’s a lot to like about Metabolic Research Centers, like the longevity as a company and the support they offer, but we are hesitant to recommend this as a weight- loss option. Among the best products we’ve seen this year is one called Dietspotlight Burn. This diet supplement has a proprietary blend of four ingredients, all of which have been proven in clinical trials to help accelerate fat loss and boost metabolism. We also haven’t been able to find any mention of negative side effects in reviews online, but quite a few dieters report seeing great results. The makers of Dietspotlight Burn are currently offering a Special Trial Offer, which shows how confident they are in their product. Previous Metabolic Research Center Review (Updated May 5, 2. List of Ingredients. Weight loss programs. Metabolic Research Centers: Product Features. Metabolic Research Center includes seven programs from which the dieter can choose. These programs are the Meta- HCG Weight Loss Program, Meta. Kidz Weight Loss Program, Menus Made Easy Weight Loss Program, Body in Balance Weight Loss Program, Meta- Balance Weight Loss Program, Meta- Slim Weight Loss Program and the standard Weight Loss Program. Luckily, there is no invasive surgery like that of the o. Band Center. The average weight loss the dieter can expect, according to program claims, is two to five pounds per week. Losing five pounds per week could cause rebound weight gain or yo- yo dieting. Many of the weight loss plans offered by Metabolic Research Centers require no calorie counting while others allow the dieter to eat only certain foods or meals. A comparison can be drawn between Metabolic Research Centers and Accu Weight- Loss in that it too offers a stunning variety of hopeful weight loss methods. In contrast, Nodietcom only offers a liquid protein supplement. The Meta- HCG even claims to support up to one pound of weight loss per day, medically. The only supplement we could find is the Glucose Formula which includes Vitamin D3, Trans- Resveratrol, L- Arginine, R- Lipoic Acid, Curcumin, Chromium, Holy Basil, Gymnema Sylvestre and Betaine. None of these ingredients will support weight loss. No pricing information is made available on the official website. In the FAQs section, dieters are told each program is priced based on the needs of the dieter, which could mean each individual center is open to charge prices witin a given range as they feel necessary. Advantages of Metabolic Research Centers. The official website offers information on the Metabolic Research Center programs. Disadvantages of Metabolic Research Centers. Consultations are needed for dieters to find out the cost of the program. There are no weight loss supplements listed though they are referred to in the description. The program could cost more than weight loss supplements. Weight loss of five pounds per week or one pound per day could be dangerous or cause rebound weight gain. Conclusion. Metabolic Research Center offers a variety of weight loss programs for everyone from children to older adults like Medi Weight Loss. The testimonials on the website show before and after photos of significant weight loss, but pricing for the program is not listed. The fact that a dieter must go into an office and talk about weight loss before being given a price is a huge negative. Once in the consultation, the expert could make huge claims and then slam a huge price tag on the dieter. Metabolic Research Centers offers a total approach to weight- loss. If you're new here, check out our meal plan, our fitness plan, and our ebooks to help you get started with Paleo. Thanks for visiting! So you’ve started eating Paleo, and you’re a few days into it. You’re not feeling the amazing effects of the diet that so many others before you have, and in fact, you feel worse! Naturally you’re asking, “Is this really worth it?”Almost everyone who is on the Paleo Diet or similar plan has been right where you are—you are not alone. Here’s the scoop on what’s happening in your body. Why Do I Feel Worse After Going Paleo? As the days grow colder, a warm and comforting dinner sounds more inviting. These Paleo one-pot meals are hearty and filling without a lot of clean up. We show you how to milk nuts, literally and figuratively, for all they're worth with our gallery of nut recipes. Now get cracking! As seen on TV. Sunny Anderson uses Dr. Ian Smith’s “Shred” Diet on The Rachael Ray Show! Smith on WGN MIDDAY NEWS Watch Dr. Smith on Anderson Cooper 360°. Have a fight coming up? Nutritionist and trainer Lauren Brooks will show you how to quickly shed pounds with this two week fighter diet plan. Many of you have asked this question over the past few months, and I’m sure many more of you have at least contemplated this question at some point. I know I did. For some, if you’ve drastically changed your diet or cut way back on carbs, processed foods, caffeine, or booze, unpleasant withdrawal effects may be setting in. This way of eating is pretty different than a Standard American Diet (SAD) and as a result, there are a lot of changes you’ll be making on multiple levels that will not go unnoticed by your body. It’s totally normal to experience a wide range of detox symptoms as your body undergoes this transition, and it’s definitely worth toughing it out to get to the other side! When you understand the reason why these terrible feelings are happening, you’ll actually have more insight into your total body health.(Read this: Everything You Need to Know About Detoxing)How to Tell if You’re Detoxing on Paleo. While the initial shock to the system isn’t pleasant, keep in mind that your body is finally getting a chance to clean out some built up toxins. Without all of the harmful foods constantly bombarding your liver and other organs, and with the addition of tons of nutrients and proteins from the fruits, vegetables, and meats you’re now eating, your body is going to take this opportunity to do some much needed cleaning, healing, and resetting. This purging is precisely what causes the symptoms you may be experiencing right now—the toxins are being dealt with instead of being suppressed. In the first three days to three weeks of going Paleo, you may (or may not) experience any of the following detox symptoms: Headaches. Fatigue. Dizziness. Irritability. Mood swings. Nausea. Intense cravings. Sinus drainage. Bowel changes. Diarrhea/Constipation. Flu- like symptoms. Brain fog. Increased urination. Increased appetite. Increased thirst. If you’ve given up drinking caffeine or alcohol, you should almost undoubtedly expect some withdrawal symptoms. Caffeine and alcohol are addictive substances, as most of us know, and your nervous and endocrine systems will need some time to re- boot. Now is a good time to warn your significant other/kids/co- workers that you might not be the sweetest, most congenial person for a few days. The benefits, however, when you get to the other side, will more than make up for it. How Long will the Dreaded Detox Last? For most, detox symptoms tend to appear within three to 1. Paleo, but for others they may take a few weeks to pop up, or you may never experience any of these at all! Most people only experience symptoms for a few days to a week, but others (especially the chronically ill) may feel icky for a month or more. There’s really no way of predicting how long your detoxification period will last, as it’s a highly individual process that depends largely on how much healing your body needs to accomplish. Don’t be disheartened, though. There are ways to not let the dreaded detox derail your Paleo plans. Coping with the Dreaded Detox. When I first went Paleo, I remember having to pee about 2. I was walking through oatmeal for the first three weeks. Walking up a flight of stairs was a big accomplishment. I was so tired and groggy—I just wanted to sleep, but then on the 2. I felt fantastic. Again, many people only experience symptoms for a few days to a week, and there’s really no way of predicting how long your detoxification period will last. There’s nothing wrong with you if yours lasts longer, and if you don’t have any at all, that’s great, too! If you’re one of the people who has some of these detox symptoms, there are two key ways to minimize them. Stay Hydrated. You’ll be doing yourself a big favor by keeping well hydrated during this time by drinking at least half of your body’s weight in pounds in ounces of water. For example, if you weigh 1. Read this: The Ultimate Guide to Paleo Drinks)2. Move Your Body. Getting regular exercise, even if it’s just a few minutes each day, can also help the body to speed the detox process along. This can be as simple as walking, taking the stairs, or doing a bit of yoga. I know that’s difficult to do when you’re already feeling tired and run down, but I promise it will be worth it.(Read this: The Benefits of Movement Over Working Out)The Positive Effects After the Detox Storm. During these difficult moments when you’re wondering whether this diet is hurting or helping you, remember that after the storm of detoxification subsides, you may very well experience: More energy. Emotional balance. Clarity of mind. Fat loss/muscle gain. Strength gains. Fewer aches and pains. Less inflammation. Less sinus congestion. Fewer seasonal allergy symptoms. Digestive ease. Clearer skin. Fewer colds. Fewer symptoms of chronic disease. And that is why you’ve chosen to do this! Stay strong and it will be worth it. Is It Just Me? You may experience a few (or many) detoxification symptoms, including intense cravings, headaches, and fatigue. Why? You probably removed a lot of toxins from your diet. These can include any of the following: Gluten and anti- nutrients (grains and legumes)Preservatives and other additives. Refined flours. Sugars and sweeteners. Dairy (which is more toxic to some than others)Since you’ve probably been eating these things your whole life, your body is going through some serious withdrawal. Gluten behaves like an opiate, and when we remove it from our diet, we can have actual withdrawals! The average human carries two to six pounds of bacteria in their body, which is somewhere around 1. When we don’t feed the bad bacteria the sugar they need to stay alive, they can (and do) make our cravings worse, at least for awhile. The cravings and irritability that we experience when we cut sugar from our diet (especially if our intake is reduced drastically) can be intense, and may also be largely influenced by the types of bacteria that we are hosting.(Read this: How to Choose the Right Probiotic)Burning Fat for Fuel. Another reason people feel lousy when they first start Paleo, is because on a cellular level, your mitochondria are learning to burn more fat for fuel. That is, your body is shifting away from using glucose (from carbs and protein) as its primary fuel source, towards using more ketones from fats. Be patient with your body (and your mitochondria!) because it can take several weeks for this transition to happen. If you have an overgrowth of bad bacteria in your gut, which you may not even be aware of, you might experience symptoms of bacterial/yeast “die- off” when you drastically reduce your carb intake. This creates a transient toxic state in the body otherwise known as the Herxheimer reaction (also known as “die- off”) which is thought to happen when toxins from the dying pathogens overwhelm the body’s ability to clear them out. It is likely the bad bacteria in your body screaming to stay alive. Fight through it and these feelings will pass. In the beginning, it’s also helpful to think of the Paleo diet as a cleanse, a detox, or a purging of sorts. Your body is finally getting a chance to clean out those built up toxins! This purging is exactly what causes the symptoms you may be experiencing right now—the toxins are in your circulation being dealt with, instead of being suppressed. It’s like when you do a good deep cleaning of your house. You turn it upside down before it looks immaculate. Support your Detox Organs with Paleo Foods. The major organs of detoxification are the liver, kidneys, gastrointestinal (GI) tract, lungs, and skin. If any one of these systems is sluggish, it can lead to a buildup of toxic chemicals that act as free radicals and can damage cells throughout the body. When your body is going through the natural detoxification process associated with a diet change, you especially want to make sure your detox organs are functioning at top notch. It doesn’t take a hard- core detox program to clean out your organs. In fact, incorporating specific foods into your Paleo diet can greatly enhance your body’s ability to naturally detoxify. Ways to Support Your Detox Organs Naturally. The Liver. The liver is considered the body’s largest organ of detoxification because it contains enzymes (collectively called the cytochrome P4. Sulfur- rich foods, such as garlic and broccoli, provide the building materials our cells need to make glutathione, the body’s “master antioxidant” utilized in phase two of detoxification. Other foods can help to support our liver detoxification enzymes as well.(Read this: 5 Paleo Foods to Support Your Liver)2. The Kidneys. Our kidneys are constantly filtering toxins and waste materials out of our blood and into the urine, making them the body’s most important organ of excretion. Ample hydration is absolutely essential for these processes and in fact, dehydration is the most common and damaging stressor to the kidneys. The Skin. Our skin is the largest organ in the human body and our first line of defense against the outside world. It’s also one of the main ways we purge toxins from our bodies, by sweating them out. Dry brushing (which involves using a natural bristle dry brush to brush the skin) can help to expedite the detox process. Be sure to brush towards the heart using long, quick strokes. Alternating between hot and cold water during your showers also helps to increase circulation, as do other forms of “contrast hydrotherapy.” Saunas, steam rooms, and detox baths can also help move the process of detoxification along quicker.(Read this: The Ultimate Guide to Clean Skincare)4. Blood as food - Wikipedia. This article is about the consumption of blood by humans. For consumption of blood by other animals, see Hematophagy. Many cultures consume blood as food, often in combination with meat. The blood may be in the form of blood sausage, as a thickener for sauces, a cured salted form for times of food scarcity, or in a blood soup. In many cultures, the animal is slaughtered. In some cultures, blood is a taboo food. Methods of preparation. Pig or cattle blood is most often used. Typical fillers include meat, fat, suet, bread, rice, barley and oatmeal. Varieties include drisheen, moronga, black pudding, blutwurst, blood tongue, kishka (kaszanka), biroldo, morcilla, mustamakkara, verivorst, and many types of boudin. Pancakes. It can provide flavor or color for meat, as in cabidela. Solidified. In Hungary when a pig is slaughtered in the morning, the blood is fried with onions and served for breakfast. The blood is allowed to congeal and simply cut into rectangular pieces and cooked. This dish is also known in Java as saren, made with chicken's or pig's blood. Blood tofu is found in curry mee as well as the Sichuan dish, maoxuewang. In Tibet, congealed yak's blood is a traditional food. Raw blood is not commonly consumed by itself, but may be used as an addition to drinks or other dishes. One example is the drinking of seal blood which is traditionally believed by the Inuit to bring health benefits. The post- communion prayer of the 1. Anglican Book of Common Prayer describes the meal as . Many other Christian denominations symbolically consume the Eucharist. However, nowhere in Christianity is the drink consumed at the Eucharist actual blood, even among denominations believing in transsubstantiation (the literal transformation of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood). The consumption of actual blood is in fact forbidden according to the book of Leviticus, part of both Jewish and Christian holy scriptures. The ban on consumption of blood by Christians was affirmed after Jesus' death by the Apostolic Decree, chronicled in the Acts of the Apostles. Other religions and spiritual traditions do consume actual blood as part of rituals. Some Pagan traditions, Satanism, a few Native American and voodoo traditions are reported to consume actual blood, in some cases human (usually willingly donated by participants in the ceremony). The symbolism of the blood itself and the act of drinking it varies between these traditions; in Pagan tradition, the blood of many participants is mingled in a chalice which they then drink from, symbolizing a bond between them not unlike becoming blood brothers. In voodoo, blood from various sources, including chicken's blood, goat's blood and even menstrual blood is a common ingredient in spells and potions. Satanism, similar to voodoo, is a nebulous collection of traditions, generally associated with devil worship and perversions of images from Gothic Romanticism, including vampiric acts such as the drinking of blood. These were originally invented by Gothic writers as violations of Christian doctrine intended to invoke disgust and horror in the reader. Some cultures consider blood to be a taboo form of food. In Abrahamic religions, Jewish and Muslim cultures forbid the consumption of blood. In the New Testament, blood was forbidden by the Apostolic Decree (Acts 1. Greek Orthodox. Goats, cattle, and other animals slaughtered in the traditional Igbo manner are dispatched with a single cut across the neck and then most or all of the blood is allowed to slowly drain from the wound. This practice may have been influenced by the Igbo Jewish community that apparently predates contact with Europe. Many Igbos who buy butchered, packaged meat from groceries and supermarkets are in the habit of washing the blood from the meat with water before preparing it. The taboos may be rooted in the fact that consuming greater quantities of blood is actually poisonous. Thailand also has a dish known as Nam Tok, which is a spicy soup stock enriched with raw cow or pig's blood. It is often used to enrich regular noodle dishes, as well as in Khao soi. It is fried or steamed as a snack or cooked in a hot pot. In Korea, people consume Seonjiguk, a soup with coagulated blood and Sundae, a blood sausage made generally by boiling or steaming cow or pig's intestines that are stuffed with various ingredients, such as pig's blood, cellophane noodles, kimchi, scallions, etc. In the Philippines, a popular dish called dinuguan is made from pig's blood and seasoned with chili and is traditionally eaten with steamed rice. The northern tradition calls for stir frying both the seasoned blood and chosen meat with vinegar until dry. This is known as . The spicy noodle soup Nam ngiao and certain variants of Khao soi of the cuisine of Shan State and Northern Thailand contain diced curdled blood. When prepared alone it is called raththam poriyal. More commonly it is stir- fried with lamb stomach and intestines with spices like ginger, garlic, cloves, cinnamon, red chili powder, green chilies, coriander powder, cumin, shallots and grated coconut. This dish is very common in the Madurai and Kongu Nadu region of Tamil Nadu. In Indonesia, especially the Batak tribe in North Sumatera, pig's blood is used as an ingredient and sauce mixed with andaliman (Zanthoxylum acantophodium) for a cuisine named Sangsang (read saksang). In Vietnam, congealed pork blood is used in Bun bo Hue (a spicy noodle soup), as well as congee (a type of rice porridge). It is simply solidified, then put into the broth to absorb the flavor. In China and Vietnam certain types of snake blood are considered to be an aphrodisiac, and are drunk with rice wine. In Britain, Ireland, and some Commonwealth countries, . Blood sausage is also popular in Norway (Blodp. It was considered to be a preventative measure against cattle diseases, and the blood drawn, when mixed with butter, herbs, oats or meal, provided a nutritious emergency food. Other popular dishes, with blood as one of the ingredients include blodpudding (black pudding. It's eaten warm or preserved in jars. Changes in taste and lifestyle have made this an uncommon dish. The soup is made with pig's blood, chicken meat, pork, ham, salami, lemon and bread, and is typically sprinkled with cumin, which provides the dish with its distinctive odor. It is usually served in the winter because it is a rather heavy dish. The dish is seldom eaten in Southern Portugal. Also very popular, is morcela sausage, a type of black pudding. Another traditional Portuguese dish known as cabidela is also made by cooking chicken or rabbit in its own blood, sometimes diluted with vinegar. In Spain, the morcilla sausage is a kind of black pudding mainly made with pig blood, with spices, fat, and sometimes vegetables. In Andalusiasangre encebollada and Valenciansang amb ceba are popular dishes made with chicken or pork solidified blood and onion. In the western region of Santander Colombia, a dish called pepitoria is made from rice cooked in goat blood. Mexicans from certain regions eat goat's stomach stuffed with pork blood and vegetables as a delicacy. In Brazil, the traditional Portuguese dish known as cabidela (see above) is also eaten. Yaguarlocro in Ecuador is a potatosoup made with sprinklings of goat's blood. References. The Oxford Companion to Food. UK: Oxford University Press, 2. With the Greeks, indeed, it continued always in force as their Euchologies still show. Balsamon also, the well- known commentator on the canons of the Middle Ages, in his commentary on the sixty- third Apostolic Canon, expressly blames the Latins because they had ceased to observe this command. What the Latin Church, however, thought on this subject about the year 4. St. Augustine in his work Contra Faustum, where he states that the Apostles had given this command in order to unite the heathens and Jews in the one ark of Noah; but that then, when the barrier between Jewish and heathen converts had fallen, this command concerning things strangled and blood had lost its meaning, and was only observed by few. But still, as late as the eighth century, Pope Gregory the Third (7. No one will pretend that the disciplinary enactments of any council, even though it be one of the undisputed Ecumenical Synods, can be of greater and more unchanging force than the decree of that first council, held by the Holy Apostles at Jerusalem, and the fact that its decree has been obsolete for centuries in the West is proof that even ecumenical canons may be of only temporary utility and may be repealed by disuse, like other laws. Mama June flaunts 60 pound weight loss after gastric sleeve surgery on "Mama June: From Not to Hot.". Herbalife Weight Loss Challenge Website. Your Weight Loss Challenge coach will provide you the password needed to access each week's documents. Shocking, indeed! Some celebs seek out extreme methods to shed pounds, while others transform with the aid of healthier methods. From Rosie O'Donnell's and Jordin. This is known as your calorie maintenance level. It's the number of calories required by your body to do everything it needs to do (intense exercise, brushing your teeth, pumping blood, keeping organs functioning properly, etc.). Calories are what our bodies use for energy, so in order to do what needs to be done, a certain number of calories are needed. If we end up consuming exactly the same number of calories that our bodies need each day, our weight would remain exactly the same. For example, if your calorie maintenance level was 2. All of the calories you take in would end up getting used (or . This is how you maintain your weight, by giving your body only the calories that it needs. No more, no less. So, for example, if your maintenance level was 2. You are giving your body more calories than it would end up burning. This is what causes weight gain. This is what causes weight loss. Sticking with the same example as before, if your daily maintenance level is 2. Consume more calories than your body needs/burns and you gain weight. And last but not least.. It is the one fact that practically all tips, hacks, methods and diets are based on.. Knowing and understanding it is the key. Just in case any of above was confusing, this article will most likely clear it all up. If your body needs 2. Doing this consistently will cause weight loss. As I mentioned before, your daily calorie maintenance level is the number of calories that your body burns per day. So, for example, if your daily maintenance level is 2. Because all 2. 50. There is no surplus and there is no deficit. A caloric deficit = weight loss. If you then burn an additional 5. Just like the deficit created if you consumed 5. Studies have shown that people who utilize both diet and exercise were more often able to maintain their weight loss long term than those who did one or the other. Doing both is also more beneficial from a general health standpoint as well. If you're the type of person who just wants a clear- cut answer, here it comes.. This can be done through diet, exercise, or for best results, both. The next thing you'll need to know is what your daily calorie maintenance level actually is. Your BMR is the number of calories that your body burns at rest to do all of the things it needs to do to keep you alive and functioning properly. Your activity level is also factored in to estimate how many other calories you burn per day in addition to your BMR. The answer given is the total of the two and should be, for most people, a pretty close estimate of your daily calorie maintenance level. Good, because that's what we're about to do. Now that you have a good estimate of your daily calorie maintenance level, it's time for the fun part. Let's call this first part . To do this, it's going to require a fairly simple 3 step experiment.. Be as consistent as you can. If your maintenance level was 2. Just get as close to 2. Of course, if a food lists the calorie content right there on the package, you can just use that instead.). Do this for a week or two (or three). Here's how: The One Fact Adjustment. Did you end up maintaining your weight? To lose weight, start consuming 5. If your maintenance level was 3. Whatever it was, subtract about 5. Doing so will put you in a caloric deficit (you'll be 5. One Fact is happening. Translation: Weight loss will now happen. It's alright, relax. Weight loss will still happen. Whether the estimated maintenance level was too high or you just miscalculated the number of calories you consumed, it doesn't really matter. Just start consuming 5. The One Fact Experiment all over again with this new amount. If you maintained weight, you would follow the above instructions. If you lost weight, you would follow the instructions below.). Did you end up losing weight at the rate of about 1- 2 pounds per week? The One Fact is happening, and weight loss is happening at the ideal expert- recommended rate. A pound or two lost per week is perfect. Continue consuming this number of calories every day from this point on. If you fit into that category and are losing weight at this speed, you can probably ignore this. However, to play it safe, you can definitely still follow the instructions below anyway. Either way, relax. There is a simple solution. Depending on what your weight does this time, follow the necessary One Fact Adjustment instructions. The above method uses just diet to get it done. This is a perfectly fine way to do it. However, it could get done just the same with exercise (albeit, a bit tougher). To do that, you'd just have to burn 5. For example, you could consume 2. AND burn 2. 50 more calories per day. A 5. 00 calorie deficit is still made. This method will cause weight loss at the rate of about 1 pound per week (more on that below). Then, I'd recommend adding in a few days of exercise per week on top of that. This will most likely result in close to a second pound lost per week. This means the combination of the two will result in 2 pounds lost per week, which is absolutely perfect from both a weight loss stand point and an overall health stand point. It is in my opinion and the opinion of most qualified experts the ideal way to lose weight. You want to lose weight faster than that. Everyone does. We all wish we could drop 2. Not only that, but attempting to lose weight faster than the above recommendation can actually be quite harmful to your health. The human body was just not designed for . At this point it will actually start to KEEP body fat as a precaution. If you go on some stupid unsafe starvation diet, your body's only real instinct is survival, and one of the first things your body may do in this situation is keep your body fat and burn muscle for energy instead. As you can imagine, this would not be a good thing. Health risks aside, studies have also shown that people who lose weight too quickly were MUCH more likely to regain it all back. That may not sound like much, but if you really think about it, it is. Do it consistently for a year, and you could lose 5. Do it for a month and you could lose 4- 8 pounds. It may not be as fast as you wish it could, but long term.. What makes being 5. Why not 1. 00? Why not 1. Well, now that you understand what the ideal weight loss rate is, this is going to make a ton of sense. What that means is, for every 3. GAIN 1 pound of fat. At the same time, it also means that for every 3. LOSE 1 pound of fat. If you consume 5. One Fact), you will end up creating a 3. And, since the ideal weight loss rate is 1- 2 pounds per week, this would put you right within range. Add some exercise in as well, and it will bring you closer to the higher end of that range. Making small, gradual adjustments to your calorie intake is the safest way to do it and the way it should always be done. This is another reason why the One Fact Adjustments call for 5. This is all for one purpose and one purpose only.. Not too slow, not too fast. Goldie Locks would be proud. Take a breath, stretch your legs, whatever. You just learned everything you need to know about weight loss. What follows from this point on is information you'll most likely either want to know, or definitely should know. Let's start with what foods you should and should not be eating.. This information isn't as much beneficial for weight loss as it is for general health purposes. See, technically, as long as the One Fact is happening (a caloric deficit), most people will lose weight no matter where their calories are coming from. That's just how it works. And, there is a lot more to your health than just your body weight. You can reach your goal weight and still be unhealthy because of the things you are and are not eating. Let's start off with what you should NOT be eating. Unless you've been living under a rock, you're really not going to be too surprised by what shows up.. They are. Foods containing any trans fat. Foods high in saturated fat. Foods high in sodium. Foods high in sugar. The thing they all have in common (besides tasting yummy) is that they are all quick and convenient. As if being the most common sources of the extra calories people consume wasn't enough reason to avoid them, there is a ton of scientific and medical research clearly showing a variety of health risks associated with diets high in these types of foods. So, here's mine. Avoid it all as completely as possible. I personally never touch this stuff, and it is my opinion that most people would be better off (both for health and weight loss purposes) if they did the same. For now though, just know that this is the stuff NOT to eat. |
